A man tried to commit suicide in front of the local legislator while protesting against the opening of a liquor shop in a residential area of Misserpur village in Haridwar on Sunday. He was taken to a private hospital where his condition deteriorated and is reported to be critical. A suicide note has been recovered from his possession in which he blamed owner of liquor shop for harassing him.
A 32 year old man tried to commit suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at the protest site in the presence of Bharatiya Janata Party MlA Swami Yatishwaranand on Sunday.
According to police, for the past two months, locals have been protesting against opening of liquor shop at Radha Krishna enclave of Misserpur village which falls under the jurisdiction of Kankhal police station. local MlA Swami Yatishwaranand reached the spot where locals were protesting and tried to resolve the matter but the villagers did not budge. Suddenly one of the protesting villagers Gulshan Kumar Saini tried to commit suicide.
Speaking to The Pioneer, the village pradhan Ravinder Kumar said,"Gulshan was perturbed over the opening of the liquor shop close to his house. He has two children and his family was feeling unsafe as customers used to drink outside his house and often knocked his door for water at night."
When quizzed on the matter, the BJP legislator blamed the district administration of supporting the liquor shop owner. He said, "The district administration is responsible for this incident. I have asked the administration many times to close this shop but the administration never attended to my suggestion and took the matter lightly." Yatishwaranand also threatened to take the matter of the state chief minister regarding the inaction of district administration.
