JMM opposes renaming Ranchi College

Tuesday, 28 February 2017 | PNS | Ranchi

Much before Ranchi College starts enjoying university status and students start enjoying at least couple of facilities any university must have, it’s proposed name has provided the opposition parties fresh new reason to attack Government. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has strongly opposed proposal of renaming Ranchi College as Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University after the college attains university status. Ranchi district unit of the party on Monday handed over a petition to Governor Droupadi Murmu, Ex-Officio Chancellor of State-run universities requesting her to reject proposal of renaming Ranchi College as Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University.

“Jharkhand has proved to be one of the most fertile lands for those willing to sacrifice for their State and nation. They must be respected with their due. Why should we borrow any name from outside which has probably no resemblance from the State. This is why we strongly oppose to any proposal or move of the Government who is trying to ignore local legends and imposing saffron-driven names,” said JMM District Unit President Shushila Ekka on Monday, who sat with party workers in front of Rajbhawan on a peaceful agitation before handing over petition to the Governor.

The party which appeared enraged over comment from Chief Minister Raghubar Das couple of days ago saying that Jharkhand didn’t need any Mukti Morcha anymore, requested the Governor to rename Ranchi College as Ram Dayal Munda University or after name of any other local legend.

The party also requested in its petition to the Governor of rejecting CNT/SPT Acts’ amendment bill, as the amendment would lead the very existence, recognition and culture of the State towards extinction. Government’s move of amending aged acts which were brought in existence only to protect interests of locals in the State would ultimately become the only reason of destruction of society, said the Party in its petition.

The JMM has requested the Governor to also reject proposal of government taking sale of liquor products in its hands from coming August. “We are in favour of liquor ban in the State, as consumption of liquor has taken thousands of lives directly, and tens of thousands indirectly,” said Ekka.
