After making necessary amendments in the UP Excise Act and making provision of capital punishment for people involved in sale and distillation of illicit liquor leading to deaths, the state government has now planned to crack down on illegal smuggling of liquor by setting up new Excise police stations in every district.
In the last two years, more than 200 persons have lost their lives and more than 100 were seriously ill after consumption of spurious liquor across the state.
In the first phase, Excise police stations will be opened in ten districts and after assessing their performance, more stations will be set up across the state. A UP government delegation had visited other states to know first hand about the system existing there and submitted a report strongly recommending setting up of Excise police stations.
Akin to Excise police stations, the state government is also mulling to set up dedicated police stations to probe big cases of power thefts and initiating criminal proceedings under provisions of UP Gangsters Act against those power pilferers. These police stations will also launch drives to check power theft.
The government believes that with the setting up of separate police stations for power, action against the accused will not only be expedited but it would also help in improving the power scenario in the state.
Initially, personnel from Police department will be posted on deputation in both Excise and Power police stations but after their success, the government might go in for fresh recruitment to ensure permanent police cadres within Excise and Power departments.
