Sumit Mamgain, the recipient of prestigious Sanjay Verma national bravery award-2017 was felicitated by the Governor of Uttarakhand Krishan Kant Paul on Monday.
15-year old Sumit, a student of Government Inter College (GIC) Raipur was honored on the occasion of Republic Day this year along with other brave boys and girls of the country.
The Governor honoured Sumit with cash reward of Rs50,000 and a certificate. His parents were also felicitated on the occasion.
Sumit, a class IX student showed exemplary courage and presence of mind when his cousin Ritesh was attacked by a leopard. Instead of getting frightened, Sumit caught hold of the tail of the leopard and attacked it with a sickle.
The brave boy was able to get his brother freed from the claws of leopard and took him home.
Sumit promptly contacted 108 emergency ambulance service and rushed his brother to Doon hospital where doctors saved his life.
The deputy chairman of State child welfare council Dr IS Pal and Kusum Rani Naithani were also present on the occasion.
