Five accused arrested in bank ATM theft

The Haridwar police have arrested five persons from Maharashtra in connection with ICICI bank theft case in which two bags of cash amounting to Rs 42 lakh were stolen from the cash supplier of ATMs. All the accused are from Tamil Nadu and used to commit burglary across the country, the police said. However, the two main accused carrying the cash are still absconding for whom the police are continuing their search.

According to the police, on July 18 at Ranipur branch of ICICI bank, the accused targetted the cash supplier of SIPl company and scooped away two bags of cash from him. SIPl company is assigned the role of filling cash in the ATMs. The incident was captured on closed circuit television cameras installed in the bank which gave the police a clue about the accused.

Revealing details of the case, the superintendent of police (City) Mamta Vohra said, “Getting clues from the CCTV footage, we could make out that the accused belonged to southern India and we checked all the hotel registers to identify them. We got out first clue from the Natraj guest house where some South Indians had stayed between July 16 and 18. They had booked room with original identification documents and phone number. Tracing the phones our teams reached the Shirdi district of Ahmed Nagar in Maharashtra from where five of them were arrested on July 26. After securing transit remand from Maharashtra police, the five accused were brought to Haridwar on Sunday.”

All the accused are from district Trichnapalli of Tamil Nadu and most of the members of gang are labourers. They are not conversant in Hindi and know only English and colloquial language. The gang leader has been identified as Deepak alias captain who decides the target for their crime. They operate across the country and were on the list of Madhya Pardesh Police as well. A team of the Haridwar police is still in Maharashtra and attempting to nab the remaining two accused.

The accused have been identified as A Karvnanm, V Silvaraj, luv Kumar, Nityaandham and Arumugam said the police. The key accused holding the cash, identified as V Mothi and Adhitahan, are still absconding and hunt is on by the police.
