Farmers’ suicide continues to rock the State with yet another debt-ridden peasant reportedly ending his life in Khordha district due to loan burden on Thursday. The farmer laxmidhar Sethi of Asarla village under Bolagarh block in Khordha district committed suicide by consuming poison.

His family members said he had grown Rabi crops by taking a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh. But he was depressed because of crop loss. District officials rushed to the village and began an investigation.

In a similar incident, a farmer of Mulukaida village under Soro block of Baleswar district attempted to commit suicide allegedly due to loan burden.

The farmer Sukura Mallik took a loan of Rs 18,000 from a self-help group (SHG) and spent the money on treatment of his ailing wife.

Mallik had to pay Rs 500 as interest every month for the loan amount. However, failing to pay the interest, he attempted to take the drastic step by consuming poison. He was rushed to the Baleswar District Headquarters Hospital, sources said.
