Notorious criminal Shahjahan alias Patu Khan was yet again successful in giving the Commissionerate police a slip as he fled from the court premises here on Monday. However, luckily the cops were saved much embarrassment when they managed to nab the fugitive from behind the court.
Earlier, Patu had succeeded in fleeing from the police custody twice. Once while undergoing treatment at the Capital Hospital and later while being admitted at the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. Patu had been arrested in connection with a firing and loot incident at Bhimatangi under Airfield police station and presently cooling his heels at the Jharapada Special Jail.
In another case, history-sheeter Akash is reported to have died while undergoing treatment at the Koraput Headquarters Hospital on Monday. After the death of Akash, his family members have alleged that he was killed in a police encounter, said sources. Enraged over the incident, the family members and supporters of Akash clashed with the police. However, the police refuted the accusations saying that he died after falling from his bike while fleeing at the sight of them. Police forces have been deployed at the spot to control the situation.
Notably, Akash was the most wanted in various criminal cases against him at various police stations in the district.
