Notorious land mafia Akshaya Kumar Nath, who had duped innocent rural people of crore of rupees in the name of giving them land in Keonjhar town, surrendered in court on Wednesday. He was absconding since 2015 after cheating people on the plea of giving them valuable land near the Keonjhar railway station.
An FIR had been registered at the Town police station, but police were not able to nab him. Being desperate, victim Suryanarayan Mahanta of Champua and six others had twice met Keonjhar SP Rajesh Pandit. Then, the Town police moved the District Sessions Court to declare the mafia absconding. The police then issued NBW against him.
Meanwhile, the accused had filed a petition at the High Court for granting him bail. The High Court ordered him to surrender before the lower court for the bail purpose. Accordingly, Nath surrendered at the JMFC Court, Keonjhar on Tuesday, but the court rejected his bail plea.
On Wednesday, he appealed at the Sessions Court for bail. When his advocate was moving the petition, Town PS SI Umakanta Sahoo, getting a tipoff, reached the court and vehemently opposed bail. The court turned down the bail petition and sent Nath to jail.
