Emami holds marriages of 20 couples

Baleswar: As many as 20 couples tied nuptial knots under an initiative of the Emami Paper Mills at Balgopalpur here at the company’s Jagannath temple campus on Wednesday, the second foundation day of the Emami Jagannath temple. Besides bearing the expenses of marriages, the company authorities donated household items worth Rs 70,000 to each couple.

Retired B’swar cop gets jail in graft case

Baleswar: The Special Vigilance Court here, in a case of disproportion property, on Wednesday convicted retired Sub-Inspector of Police of Baliapal Ramnath Panda and sentenced him to two years’ jail term along with a fine of Rs 20,000 fine, in default another three months of imprisonment. Raids had been conducted at Panda’s house by the Vigilance police on October 20, 1997 and his asset worth Rs 2.31 lakh in cash was confiscated on the report of the Vigilance.

Boudh RI caught accepting bribe

Brahmapur: The Vigilance police on Wednesday caught Baghipada Revenue Inspector (RI) Gajendar Digal red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 7,000. Digal came under raid as he had asked Sudarsan Mallik of Sanabasana village in Boudh district for the bribe to submit an inquiry report to enable him to get ROR for a land which is in his possession for 30 years.

Villagers protest corruption in Agalpur block

Balangir: Villagers of Agalpur block led by Congress leader Akash Mishra on Wednesday gheraoed the block office demanding a Vigilance inquiry into the irregularities in development activities since 2012 and action against the guilty officials. Mishra said Government rules have been flouted and Palli Sabha is not held properly for execution of the works. Work order has been issued in the name of GPTA which would check and measure its own work; so, no transparency would be ensured. The agitators submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the block administration.

Headmasters’ conference held in Sonepur

Sonepur: A conference of headmasters of Sonepur block for improving the performance of students and teachers was inaugurated at the Maharaja High School here by Subarnapur district Collector Dasarathi Satpathy on Wednesday. Among others, guest of honour Hara Prasad Rath, District Education Officer Benudhara Behera, District Information and Public Relations Officer B Hujanga Bhusan Rao and Maharaja HS headmistress Santosini Sethi were present. Sanjhinki PUPS headmaster Krushna Chandra Panda delivered a vote of thanks.

Axis Bank opens new branch at J’suguda

Jharsuguda: The Axis Bank opened its new branch to offer a comprehensive range of banking services at Sarbahal Road here on Wednesday. The branch was inaugurated by Jharsuguda Collector Bibhuti Bhusan Pattnaik in the presence of bank branch head Sanjay Silas.
