108 laptops distributed to blind students

To connect blind students with IT world, the State Department of Social Security and Empowerment of PwDs (SSEPD) distributed 108 laptops to blind students at a function held at the VRCH premises here on Thursday.

Chief guest SSEPD Minister Usha Devi said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has created the independent department for persons with disabilities (PwDs) to focus on their rehabilitation and empowerment.

SSEPD Principal Secretary Niten Chandra said the laptops would certainly help the visually-challenged students not only in their higher education but would also connect them with the technology world.

SSEPD Director Mansi Nimbhal urged the students to utilise the laptop properly and enhance their knowledge and skill through information technology, which would contribute to their families’ economy as well as that of the country.

The laptops are installed with the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) software which helps the blind students in using them. Among others, SSEPD Under Secretary to Government Ambika Prasad Patnaik and Section Officer Asit Pani were present. SSEPD Joint Secretary Deba Prasad Dash offered a vote of thanks.
