Dadi Ka Kehna

Tuesday, 01 August 2017 | Roshani Devi

Hiccups, we all thought, and still do, come when someone is remembering you. Not so really. They can be very annoying but I have the perfect antidote, says Roshani Devi

My grandson has a very bad habit — the moment he puts food into his mouth, he starts hiccuping. First I thought it was his protest against us forbidding him to have water during a meal, something that was another annoying habit of his. But I did a lot of research on this syndrome and found out that it was actually very common among children across the globe. My home remedies instantly came to work and here are a few you could try too.

The best one is something that the child, or an adult for that matter, would not mind doing as a remedy. Put a teaspoon of sugar crystals under the child’s tongue and allow it to melt. Swallow and then have a glass of water. The hiccups will stop. Swallowing sugar stimulates the vagus nerve and makes the body forget the hiccups. Holding of breath is another ageold way to deal with hiccups. It is recommended that you hold your breath for around 20-30 seconds and repeat the procedure twice or thrice or till the hiccups stop. Also, spices like cardamom and also dry ginger are known to be effect in dealing with the problem of long-term hiccups which refuse to go away once they come. Have ginger juice with honey or boil ½ tsp of cardamom in 1 cup of water and sip like tea for best results.
