A day after woman software engineer was strangled to death with a computer cable at her workstation on the Infosys campus in Pune, a visiting police team arrested a security guard from Mumbai in the early hours of Monday, in connection with the incident.
Twenty-three-year-old Rasila Raju OP was found strangled late on Sunday evening on the 9th floor of Infosys’ facility in phase II of the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjewadi located on the outskirts of Pune city.
“We have arrested the suspected,” Pune’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone-3) Ganesh Shinde said.
Identifying the arrested suspect as one Bhaben Saikia (26), a security guard who hails from Assam, the Pune police said that Bhaben had admitted to strangling Rasila to death, in a fit of rage. Bhaben allegedly killed Rasila after she objected to him staring at her and threatened to complain against him to her superiors.
Quoting the information gathered from the Infosys officials, the police said that though Rasila had a day off on Sunday, she had come in to work on a project and was in touch with colleagues at the company’s Bengaluru office.
However, when her supervisor based in Bengaluru failed to get through to her over phone late on Sunday evening, the officials at the Hinjewadi office were asked to look out for her. Upon a search, Rasila was found stranguled to death by using a computer cable.
The police identified the suspect on the basis of CCTV footage. Acting on a tip-off, the police rushed a team to Mumbai to track down Bhaben, who had fled the scene after Rasila’s murder.
According to police, the relevant CCTV footage showed that Rasila entering the room where her workstation is located at 3.05 pm. She came out for a break around 5 pm.
