Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday appeared before a Bhiwandi court in connection with a defamation case filed against him by an activist for alleging that the RSS was behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The court adjourned the hearing for March 3.
Rahul appeared before the Bhiwandi court while he was on his way to Panjim to campaign for the Goa Assembly polls. Rahul’s appearance before the court coincided with Gandhi’s death anniversary.
Talking to mediapersons after his appearance before the court, Rahul said, “I remember Gandhiji today... My fight is that against an ideology that killed Gandhi and those who have removed his (Gandhi’s) photograph from the calendar. (Despite these efforts) Gandhiji will stay in the heart of India forever..They have killed Gandhi but they cannot erase him...”
The court is hearing a complaint filed by Rajesh Kunte, who is the secretary RSS’ Bhiwandi unit, against Rahul for the statement made by the latter. At that rally, Rahul had said, “RSS ke logon ne Gandhiji ko goli maari”.
Rahul — who had in September last year withdrew his petition before the SC seeking dismissal of defamation case filed Kunte and told the court that he ready to tried on charges of defaming the RSS — had earlier appeared before the court of Judge Tushar Waze at Bhiwandi in 2016.
