Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday banned the sale plastic bags below 50 microns in Goa, stating that plastic litter was one of the biggest sources of choked drains in the State. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a public function in the State capital, Parrikar said that sale of plastic bags and causing litter with such bags would result in a fine of Rs500 from July.
“Plastic bags below 50 microns will be banned from July. Initially the fine will be Rs500 for those selling the bags or those found littering them. Subsequently the fine will be raised to Rs5,000,” Parrikar told reporters.
“Plastic bags are a cause of a lot of environmental degradation. They are one of the most common sources of choked drains, which is also a menace and causes flooding during the rains,” Parrikar also said.
