IIT-Madras student hurt in attack over 'beef fest'

A PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras on Tuesday suffered serious eye injury when he was attacked by a group of students for participating in a ‘beef fest’ held on the campus.

The beef festival was held on Sunday in protest against the Central Government’s order banning sale of bovines for slaughter at animal markets.

According to a student, a group of students surrounded R Sooraj and attacked him, injuring his right eye during lunch time at the mess. Sooraj was taken to an eye hospital. Sooraj is doing his PhD in aerospace at the premier institute.
