Police in Northeastern State of Tripura on Wednesday detained eight suspected Rohingyas from Myanmar, who had been moving suspiciously in Khayerpur area, police said.
The group of eight including three men, two women and three children were taken to Ranirbazar police station under west Tripura District after detention and are being quizzed at present to ascertain their credentials.
“locals have informed the police about the movement of suspicious persons in the locality. While questioning the eight persons said that they came from the Kashmir and that they are going to Bangladesh in search of jobs. They have UNHCR refugee cards also. It is possible that they have come here to sneak into Bangladesh,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.
“It is difficult to say at this moment as to how and from where they came here. We are quizzing them to get the details,” said the official.
Union Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier sounded alert to the North Eastern States for the region shares over 4500 km long border with Bangladesh, China, Myanmar and Bhutan.
India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-km-long border, of which 262 km falls in Assam.
It may be mentioned here that there is free movement regime between India and Myanmar, which allows movement of ethnic communities living on either side of the border to travel 16 km across the boundary without a visa.
