Fond of splurging on his six girlfriends, the Delhi Police arrested a 19-year-old boy who was involved in nearly 30 cases of burglary in posh areas of South Delhi.
“The accused started committing theft since he was 14 years old. Since he was a juvenile, he used to stay away from his family and by the time and when he turned 18, he was charged in approximately 25 cases of theft and burglary in South Delhi. He has been sent to jail in 2016 in a case related to Hauz Khas area. Out on bail, in 2017, the accused took to committing burglary and has been wanted in ten cases in houses across Defence Colony, Vasant Kunj, Chattarpur and Safdarjung enclave area,” said a police officer.
Talking about the modus operandi of the accused, a senior investigator said, “The accused used to break into the house by entering through the window. Instead of stealing studded jewellery items, the accused targeted gadgets and cash which were easily sold at a higher price in the neighbouring area of South Delhi. To avoid getting caught, Manoj Kumar, a drug addict used to buy surgical hand gloves and wear them at the time of burglary to avoid leaving behind fingerprints.”
Ishwar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) said the accused identified as Manoj Kumar, a Class XI dropout took to burglary to consume drugs and to lead a luxurious lifestyle with his girlfriends. “Keeping in mind the recent spate of burglaries taking place in the areas of South Delhi, the Special Task Force started investigating the cases. Technical surveillance was mounted and based on a tip off, police found that Manoj would be coming near Sultanpur metro station on Wednesday evening,” said the senior police official.
Police said accordingly a trap was laid and Manoj was apprehended. At his instance, police recovered Rs 30,370 stolen cash, four mobile phones, one Russian made binocular, two home theatre with speakers, housing breaking tools such as iron rinch, a pair of surgical hand gloves etc.
During sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed the names of his associates, Manoj alias Kala, Bantu and Kunal, who are absconding.
Police said that efforts are on to nab the remaining accused persons.
