The Delhi Police on Wednesday busted a “gang of maids” whose members stole cash and jewellery from posh colonies in the national Capital such as Hauz Khas and Greater Kailash.
So far seven women have been arrested leading to a recovery of jewellery worth
Rs 1 crore and efforts are on to trace other members, including some male members of the gang. The women themselves approached households convincing them to hire them. They used to work sincerely for a month gaining their trust and then took away the valuables.
Dr G Ram Gopal Naik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) said, “A team of Crime Branch based in R K Puram was tasked to apprehend the members of the gang of thieves and burglars that had created a havoc in Delhi-NCR by committing a spate of burglaries.
“Recently five of these cases were also transferred to the Crime Branch for thorough investigation and were being investigated the by the Special Team for Active Robbers and Snatchers (STARS) of Crime Branch,” he said.
The official said a team was formed under ACP Ishwar Singh. By mounting technical surveillance, the team received a tip off on November 25 that the burglars would come near Ghazipur bus depot.
Accordingly, the team acted swiftly and a raid was conducted to nab the accused persons. The team was successful in apprehending the gang members who were found involved in nine cases of burglary and house-thefts in Delhi-NCR.
During investigation, sleuths found that the modus operandi was similar as the female accused accessed the houses of the victims in the guise of servant maids or domestic helps who offered their services to the victims showing their expertise and professionalism. The accused mostly worked in pairs, as one of them distracted members of the victim family with her gimmicks and the other one, who is usually expert in breaking locks of almirahs or drawers, burgled the house.

“With the help of CCTV recordings available at the place of incidents and surrounding areas, it was found that there were common faces in most of the incidents. Also the turnout of the female accused was similar, almost all of them wearing shawls and sarees. With the interrogation of the accused it was informed that all the accused belong to Bhagalpur in Bihar and other adjoining areas,” said Naik.
Explaining their expertise, the officer said that they were so professional that they were able to differentiate between a fake and a real jewellery.
The gang stayed in Delhi-NCR for short periods and left for Bihar after amassing huge quantity of gold and diamond jewellery. The gang disposed off the loot with the help of jewellers situated in Bihar only as they had apprehension that they might be exposed while dealing with Delhi based jewelers.
