Bharatiya Janata Party’s Member of Parliament (MP) Kanwar Singh Tanwar had lodged a first information report (FIR) against a person who made several calls to him, posing as someone working in BJP president Amit Shah’s office. He would say he had a floppy which contained some evidence against former Congress Union Minister Suresh Pachouri.
Annoyed by the frequent calls, Tanwar finally called Shah’s office and enquired about the calls. BJP president’s office informed him that no such call was made to him. Tanwar immediately reported it to Delhi Police. A written complaint was submitted by Tanwar’s private secretary Rajesh Kumar, who stated that a person claiming to be from the office of the BJP president was calling the MP and identified himself as Amit.
“The man called the MP three times, gave him a mobile number and said BJP president Amit Shah wanted him to call on the number immediately. On calling the number, a person named Bhati picked up and identified himself as the BJP’s president’s aide. Bhati then provided another number of Bhupender, who claimed to work in the Prime Minister’s office (PMO), and who would give him a floppy which contained some evidence against former Union Minister Suresh Pachauri,” Kumar alleged in the complaint. Tanwar is an MP from the Amroha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
A senior police official said they have registered an FIR under section 66(D) of the Information Technology at Economic Offences Wing (EOW) police station and investigation has been taken up. “It appears to be the handiwork of some criminal who got the number of the MP and made calls claiming to be from Amit Shah’s office,” said the police official. A team is working on the details to bring the caller to the book, the official added.
