To avail the perks enjoyed by the officials of the foreign embassies across countries, a 40-year-old businessman used to roam around in a black Honda Civic with the registration papers of the car which he had bought from an official of the Sri lankan Embassy last year.
Police sources said that the accused used to park the car with the registration papers outside his house to show off. “He wanted to create an impression among his neighbours as to how well connected he is,” said a senior investigator.
“Forty-year-old Nitin Malhotra was arrested by a team of the Farsh Bazaar police station when he was found impersonating as an employee of the Sri lankan Embassy and driving a car with the registration number belonging to Sri lankan Embassy,” said Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara).
“During interrogation, Nitin Malhotra introduced himself as an employee of Sri lankan Embassy but on detailed interrogation, he broke down and confessed that he has no concern with Sri lankan Embassy.
Nitin Malhotra had purchased the above car from Sri lankan Embassy on July 15 last year from the owner, a Sri lankan Minister.
As per the documents recovered from him, the embassy registration number was cancelled on July 15 itself. Accused Nitin Malhotra was issued a new registration number Dl 3CBA 0814 on his name. However, the
accused Nitin did not remove the embassy registration number from the vehicle to obtain the amenities of embassy car despite the cancellation by the Embassy. He continuously used the embassy registration number plate on the above car and represented himself
as an employee of Sri lankan Embassy,” said the DCP.
The senior police officer said, “On Tuesdays, while patrolling, police found the Honda Civic car parked inside Chitrakoot Apartment in East Arjun Nagar in Shahdara.
Accordingly, police raided and found Nitin Malhotra along with his black Honda Civic car.
During enquiry, police found that the registration number affixed on the vehicle is forged. When quizzed, Malhotra confessed that he used to impersonate as an ambassador. Following which, a case under sections 418, 419, 420 and 482 IPC and relevant sections of the MV Act was registered at the Farsh Bazar police station.
