With the arrest of two persons and the apprehension of a juvenile, the Delhi Police claimed to rescued a seven-year-old boy from his kidnappers within 24 hours.
The plan was hatched by the ex-lover of the victim's mother's sister to teach the child's maternal grandfather a lesson, said Vijayanta Arya, Additional DCP-I (Northwest).
The child's maternal aunt had been pressurised by her family to break up with the accused and he was hurt with it and wanted to exact revenge. He roped in his friends by giving them the temptation of money which they would get as ransom for the kid, she said.
On February 25 at around 8 pm, the accused persons reached outside the victim's house on a white colored scooty. One of them misled the child, who was playing with his friends, by asking him to come with them as they will take him to his maternal uncle for a party. The child easily believed him and sat on the scooty. The other two then took him to a room in Tri Nagar.
Next day at around 7 am, one of the accused called the child's mother from a PCO booth at New Delhi railway station and demanded demanded a ransom of Rs5 lakh for the child's release. The caller also told her that he would call her around 3 pm to let her know the place and mode of payment.
Police conducted inquiry near the residence of the victim and activated the network of local intelligence sources to source information.
The mother informed police that she doesn't live with her husband. It was also found that the child's maternal aunt had ended her relationship with a man due to family pressure, she said.
Based on call detail records and local intelligence, the accused was identified as Mohd Kapil, a resident of Shakurpur, who was angry at the maternal grandfather of the child.
He was arrested along with Hasan and a juvenile was apprehended.
