Declare road adjacent to parking sites as no parking zone: l-G to officials

lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Friday chaired a meeting to review the availability of parking sites in Delhi.

In order to ensure a smooth rollout of the new parking policy, the l-G directed authorities to declare road stretches adjacent to the existing parking sites as “no parking zone”.

The l-G stressed that in view of the large number of vehicles and limited number of parking sites, priority should be given in upgrading multi-level stack parking instead of surface parking.

He further advised that the issues of last-mile connectivity must be simultaneously addressed for a comprehensive solution to traffic decongestion and passenger convenience.

The meeting was attended by Kailash Gahlot, Minister (Transport), Chief Secretary, Delhi, Principal Secretary (Urban Development), Principal Commissioner of DDA, Principal Secretary (PWD), Commissioner (Transport), all three municipal Commissioners, and representative from DMRC.

Senior officials of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Delhi Development Authority, DMRC and all the three municipal corporations also informed the l-G about their existing parking sites and the potential sites that can be developed into stack parking.

Commissioner of East MCD informed the l-G that there are 51 surface parking sites in its jurisdiction at present. Apart from this, the Corporation has also identified 71 additional sites for surface parking.

He said the DDA has allotted two parking sites for multi level parking at Saraswati Kunj and Mangalam t-point.

However, the North Corporation Commissioner appraised the l-G that there are 93 surfaces parking in its area having the capacity of 24,000 vehicles approximately and six multi level parking are also operational at various locations. Besides, the civic body has also identified another 17 sites for the same purpose, it said.

While, Commissioner of South DMC said 81 parking sites and three multi level sites at Hauz Khas, Munirka and Kalkaji are operational in its jurisdiction. The NDMC currently has 31 operational sites, DDA has 9 sites and DMRC has 95 sites.
