Senior IPS officer Datta Padsalgikar, till recently an Additional Director with the Intelligence Bureau, will take over as Mumbai’s new Police Commissioner on Sunday.
An IPS officer from the 1982 batch, Padsalgikar will replace Ahmed Javed, who has been appointed as an Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
In an announcement made on Saturday, the State Government appointed Padsalgikar with effect from January 31, following
the superannuation of Ahmed Javed of the 1980 batch.
Following Padsalgikar’s appointment, the State Government downgraded the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner to the rank of Additional Director-General of Police till further orders.
Padsalgikar, an officer of the rank of Addl DGP, was recently been repatriated to his parent-cadre of Maharashtra. His appointment as the Mumbai Police Commissioner was very much on the cards.
Padsalgikar will be the 40th police commissioner of Mumbai. He had earlier served in several foreign embassies including the United States.
While in Mumbai, Padsalgikar had worked as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection).
