National Capital receives highest rainfall in 10 yrs

As rainfall continued to disrupt normal life in the national Capital on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) claimed to have recorded the highest rainfall in last 10 years at 144 mm in a span of 24 hours from 5.30 pm on Friday, out of which 80 mm of rain were recorded in a span of mere three hours from 5.30 am to 8.30 am on Saturday. The monsoon rain also cooled down the mercury bringing the maximum temperature at 30.1 degree Celsius and minimum at 26 degree Celsius.

Prior to this, the record stood at 126 mm of rain on July 28, 2009.

“Since morning, the rainfall was recorded as 8.0 mm in Palam, 22.4 mm in Safdarjung, 13.6 mm in lodhi, 13.4 mm at Ayannagar and 1.5 mm at Ridge… The overall rainfall recorded at Palam in last 24 hours is 144 mm which is the highest for this season,” an IMD official told The Pioneer.

He said the rain would continue at same level on Sunday. “The maximum humidity stood at 100 while the minimum at 85. The weather will continue to remain humid but temperatures would be moderate,” the official added further.

The weatherman said the National Capital Region (NCR), which has witnessed patchy to moderate rainfall since Saturday morning, will see more rain through the day, providing relief from humidity.

“Rainfall on Saturday would be moderate in the entire NCR, including Faridabad, Gurugram and Noida. The rain would not be continuous,” an IMD official said.

According to weather analysts, the rainfall would be slightly lower on Sunday but increase on Monday. “Rain on Sunday would drop but increase on Monday. It would be intermittent rainfall till Monday,” private weather forecaster Skymet’s director Mahesh Palawat said.

The temperature at 11.30 am on Saturday was 29.3 degree Celsius.

The humidity is expected to increase in sync with the temperature and thus would be bearable.
