A meeting of Muslim organisations in Kerala on Saturday passed a resolution saying that the alleged Central move to bring a uniform civil code was unacceptable. The meeting, held in Kozhikode and organised by the Muslim league, an ally of the Congress, opined that the issue of triple talaq was bait attached to the fish-hook of common civil code.
leaders of the Muslim bodies were of the opinion that Uniform Civil Code was against the principles of secularism in India and that there was no need to make any changes to the Muslim personal law in the existing situation. They also said any modification to Shari’a was not acceptable to them.
“All the laws under the Muslim Shari’a, especially those regarding marriage and divorce, were rich in themselves. There is no need of any amendments,” said Muslim league leader ET Muhammad Basheer. He added that the Central Government was trying to make political mileage by raising this issue now.
PK Kunhalikutty, former Kerala minister and the Muslim league’s parliamentary party leader in the State Assembly said that the issue of Talaq was being made a subject of discussion at a time when it was absolutely unnecessary. “That Prime Minister Narendra Modi is talking about this so much is creating suspicion,” he said.
leaders of Jama’at-e-Islami, Kerala Nadvatul Mujahiddin, KNM — Hussain Madavoor group and the Muslim Education Society participated in the meeting apart from the functionaries of the Sunni sect (EK group). The Sunni sect led by Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliar stayed away from the meeting.
