The US Consulate General, Mumbai along with Indo-American Education Society (IAES) opened ‘American Corner’ — a library and online resources on USA at Ahmedabad recently.
This is first American Corner in Gujarat and fifth in the country after Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad. The idea of the initiative is to establish a reliable information centre about the US.
“It is one-stop information on American society, through a large collection of books and online resources. It would help people to know and understand on life and culture in the United States, “ said James Fennel, cultural affairs officer with US consulate general, Mumbai, adding that the opening of the centre would add value to the long-standing cultural partnership, especially the academic exchange between India and the US. It would strengthen people-to-people ties by creating resources to learn about educational and other opportunities for Indians in US, said Fennel.
He said that the US consulate was looking forward to further strengthen cultural and bilateral ties by providing people readily available resources so that they understand American culture, society and economy in better way.
A collection of 400 books and DVDs, computers with free access to the internet and e-sources including 40 remotely accessible databases are available at the American Corner. Situated in the Navarangpura locality in the middle of the city, the centre is also equipped with a space for self-study, small group work and a language lab in addition to modern computer facilities. The facilities at the American Centre can be utilized by any one above the age of 16 years.
