In a horrifying act, villagers of S Chintaluguda under the Gunupur police limits in Rayagada district killed a person by forcing him to consume pesticide as they suspected him of killing fellow villagers through witchcraft.
The deceased was Madhab Sabar. Police on Tuesday arrested seven persons in this connection while further investigation in the matter is on. Gunupur PS IIC Nirmal Panigrahi said, “After receiving the complaint on Sunday, we visited the village today. We visited the spot where Madhab was killed. Prime accused Rabi Das in the presence of witnesses took us to the cremation ground. From there, we collected a few bones of Madhab. We have also seized the empty container of the pesticide which Madhab was forced to consume. We have arrested seven persons. Further investigations are on.”
On Sunday at around 8 pm, villagers collectively asked Madhab to come out of his house. He was taken to the middle of the village.
While villagers interrogated him, Madhab remained silent. Finally, villagers decided to kill him. The villagers killed him by forcing him to consume pesticide. Then, they cremated his body at the village burial ground. It was after Madhab’s wife Sambari lodged a complaint with the police on Monday that the police visited the village to probe the incident. The police in the presence of a magistrate interrogated the persons involved in the barbaric act.
