'Vedanta's Vidyarthi Vikash scheme role model'

Addressing the annual convocation of Vedanta Vidyarthi Vikash Yojana (VVVY) at Jharsuguda, OPEPA Director Mahendra Mallik said that in the success of VVVY at Jharsuguda, Vedanta has demonstrated that corporates can make real difference to educational scenario in the region where they operate.

He said the project VVVY is a role model in corporate CSR for others in the State.

Initiated in the year 2009 in the peripheral villages of Vedanta to enable students of vernacular high schools to pass matriculation, the project has achieved significant success by improving the pass percentage from 18 per cent in 2008 to 99.80 per cent in the current session.

A total of 109 students appeared matriculation this year, out of which 108 students passed class 10th with 40 per cent of them in first division .The programme has also recorded 100 per cent passing percentage for girls.

Till date 3,031 high school students have availed academic support through VVVY centres at rural villages of Jharsuguda. The project is anchored by NGO partner AJKA with the Vedanta CSR team which involves parents, village watch committees and trained teachers. The project also leverages Government educational infrastructure in the villages for conduct of the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Vedanta limited Aluminium Business CEO Abhijit Pati said, "We are committed to expand the scope of the project at State level. In the coming days, the focus will be on quality enhancement by integrating scholastic support for higher education and skill oriented academic input programme. The programme will also explore innovation to promote girl child education. To support scientific temper, we will also help bringing up a state of art scientific lab at Jharsuguda."

Also present on the occasion was District Education Officer Bikas Chandra Pradhan who assured all supports to the project.

The programme felicitated all the children present with a memento and the toppers were given away trophies with financial assistance. Parents, teachers, members of the village education committee, senior officials from Vedanta and prominent citizens from Jharsuguda district were present.
