UCIl mishap: DGMS team begins probe

Concerned over mishap a two-member team of director general of mines safety’s (DGMS) regional office in Chaibasa  on Monday began a  probe into the reasons  that lead to the mishap at the Uranium Corporation of India limited’s (UCIl) Turamdih mines.

P Rangenatheswar, deputy director, DGMS, Dhanbad said that the team led by director, mines safety, Ashish Kumar has begun the probe by questioning of the officials as well as the workers posted at the Turamdih mines. The team is also carrying out a physical verification of the mishap site for establishing the exact reason behind the mishap.

“As per the plans, the team will submit a report to us. And if there is any negligence on the part of the Turamdih mines’s management, then we will  take necessary action against those found guilty,” said Rangenatheswar. Manager, mines safety, Turamidh Mines, GC Nayak confirmed about the ongoing probe by the DGMS team. “Mining operation is suspended due to the probe by the DGMS office. We are doing the maintenance work at the site,” said Nayak.

Nayak, when queried, said that there must be some reason behind the mishap which claimed three lives and left nine miners injured, but he was not sure if there was any negligence in respect of the mines safety.
