The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has taken cognizance of the death of two children by nitrous oxide in the MY Hospital of Indore. The Commission on Monday asked the Dean of the MGM Medical College, Indore, to submit report over the incidence in ten days.
The Commission has taken cognizance over the death of Khandwa resident Gopal’s five year son Ayush’s death due to mixing of nitrous oxide gas in oxygen. Ayush’s hernia was to be operated on Friday for that he was brought in the operation theatre after administration of anesthesia where soon after giving oxygen his condition deteriorated and he died. Similarly one and a half year old Rajveer died as he was given nitrous oxide at the place of oxygen.
The Commission taking cognizance told the Dean of MGM College to submit report over the issue within ten days.
Notably, in a shocking case of laxity, staff of largest government hospital of Indore gave nitrous oxide a widely used anesthetic to breathe in place of oxygen to both the children leading to the death of a five-year-old Ayush and one and a half year old Rajveer.
Ayush died during Hernia surgery on May 27, while Rajveer breathed his last on Sunday. MY Hospital acting Superintendent Dr Sumit Shukla said on Sunday that as per investigation, the pipeline that was supposed to supply oxygen to patients was carrying nitrous oxide.
The operation theatre, which was inaugurated on May 24, has been sealed while a technician from a private company Rajendra Choudhary who was responsible for fitting the gas supply pipeline, has been booked for manslaughter he said.
