Normal life was adversely hit in the State as the temperature was recorded at 40 degree Celsius in many parts of the State.
A Meteorological Centre release said 16 places in the State recorded temperatures above 40 degree C. Talcher, Bhawanipatna and Bhubaneswar recorded above 43 degree C. Angul recorded a high of 43.7 degree C on Friday.
Baripada recorded 43.6 degree C, followed by Chandabali (42.8), Hirakud (42.7), Sambalpur (42.6), Jharsuguda (42.5), Titlagarh, Cuttack and Sundargarh (42 each), Keonjhar (41.3), Sonepur (40.8) and Phulbani (40.2).
local Meteorological Centre Director Sarat Chandra Sahu said intense heat wave would continue for next five days. He added that heat wave condition was likely to prevail at a few places over interior Odisha with severe heat wave condition at one or two places over coastal Odisha on Saturday.
Meanwhile, norwester accompanied by drizzle occurred in the capital city and some parts of the State bringing a modicum of relief to the people.
A strong wind flow in the city, however, uprooted many trees, affecting the vehicular movement and power supply in few areas.
The sudden hailstorm prevented landing of three flights at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on Friday afternoon.
According to sources, two flights of Air India and Indigo airlines were unable to land due to bad weather conditions which developed in the afternoon.
The Air India flight was coming from Varanasi while the Indigo flight had originated from Bengaluru. The Air Traffic controller did not permit the flights to land in Bhubaneswar due to the unfavorable weather.
They were diverted and made a landing in Kolkata.
According to an IMD bulletin, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at one or two places over the State next 24 hours.
