State gets emergency helpline number for stroke patients

Tuesday, 31 May 2016 | PNS | Dehradun

In a first of its kind service in Uttarakhand, the Max Super Speciality Hospital has released an emergency help line number for stroke patients. The emergency number 0135-6673666 was launched by the hospital to commemorate four years of its establishment in State capital and would be managed by neurology specialists.

Speaking on the occasion, the- Director MIND and Medical Advisor -Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dr AK Singh said that in most cases, it is seen that the patients lose time in recognizing a stroke and transporting the patient to the hospital. He informed that in India only 3 Percent of stroke patients receive thrombolytic drugs to dissolve clots as they are rarely brought to the hospital at right time. “A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is stopped due to a clot (ischemic stroke) or rupture of blood vessels (hemorrhagic stroke),’’ he said.

The Principal Consultant Neurology, Dr Deepak Goyal said that the emergency number would be helpful for medical practitioners too as they can talk to the specialist on what immediate measures they should take before the patient is shifted to a higher centre. He informed that a stroke patient has a golden period of 3-4 hours within which he should get its treatment. Dr Goyal said that the Blood Pressure and Diabetes are termed as deadly duo responsible for stroke.
