State Food Commission holds talk

Thursday, 30 June 2016 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

A seminar on "Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security" was organised on Wednesday by the Odisha State Food Commission (OSFC) in association with the Coalition for Food and Nutrition Security (CFNS) to achieve sustainable food and nutrition security in Odisha.

The seminar focused on preventing malnutrition in the first 1,000 days of child birth and the role of OSFC.

"For effective identification of specific food and nutrition security gaps and addressing them by appropriate interventions, policymakers and decision makers need to identify the complex nature of the problem and its various and unified causes. Therefore, awareness on the holistic nature of the food and nutrition security and a certain level of technical knowledge are required to effectively address the complex systems determining the nutrition situation of Odisha beyond the narrowly defined food sector," said UNICEF (India) chief Dr Saba Mebrahtu.

Some recommendations on farming system approach to impact nutrition, scaling up infant and young child feeding, food fortification and process of nourishing the undernourished tribal children were suggested by the participants in the seminar. OSFC member Dr Shipra Mallick said that the recommendations will be shared with the Government of Odisha and civil society organisations for better access and control over food and nutrition services and supplies.
