Spellathon conducted at Vivekananda library

A spellathon was conducted by Devanshi Kshterpal, a 12th class student of St Josephs Convent, Bhopal, at Vivekananda library. The competition was held for students upto class 5.

 The event was divided in four rounds, the first being the screening round where 15 words were dictated which needed to be spelt correctly by the participants. Five students were shortlisted who went on to the quiz. The rest of the rounds were also based on spelling the words correctly.

Spellathon did not only focus on how to spell a word correctly but also put impetus on vocabulary, the meaning, the pronunciation and they way these words are used in everyday life. The event saw a very lively and encouraging participation where all the students were well-read and excited. The winners of Spellathon were class 4 students- Manasvi Baweja of Delhi Public School, Aditya Barnwal of Billabong High and Prakamya S Balot of Delhi Public School.

Besides, Spinayarn was conducted by Ekta Sareen, an English teacher at St. Josephs Convent, Bhopal. It saw an excited participation from over 30 students from classes 6 to 8. The event was very lively and it focused on testing the memory, vocabulary, Parts of speech and made the students think on their feet.

In the ice breaking session the students were asked to describe a cow with adjectives starting with each alphabet and remembering what the last student said. In the next round, the participants were asked to finish famous tongue twisters.

The next two sessions saw the students spinning a story out of the first two lines of a story or a poem that was put forward by Ekta. They did not only come up with some imaginative and creative twists but also ended up coming with rhyming phrases. Then there was a character play where the main characters were a monkey, Bob the builder, a blue mask man and a hippo.

 Thereafter, they were asked to draw an imaginary character called Maggot on the board and describe him. The event not only tested the students’ creativity but also encouraged them for public speaking.

The winners were Siddharth Mongee of class 6 (Billabong High), Zainab Johar of class 7 (St Josephs Convent) and Shambhavi of class 7 (DPS).
