Slow water flow in rivers results in low power generation

Friday, 30 September 2016 | PNS | Dehradun

Slow water flow in rivers following snowfall in higher reaches is resulting in the decrease in power generation at various State- based power projects for the last few days. The production of power has been decreased by around 3 MU at various state- based power projects over the last four days, said the officials.  Though the capacity of the state- based power projects is around 19 MU this season just around 16 MU is being generated due to the above reason, said BCK Mishra, director operation Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam limited (UJVNl) on Thursday.

He further said that there had been significant decrease in power generation at various state- based power units during the current monsoon following heavy rainfall that occurred at higher mountainous regions. The rains caused silts in the Himalayan rivers and their tributaries to render the turbines of the hydropower projects non-functional, resulting in disruption in electricity generation process, Mishra said.

He further said that all the works related salary distribution, human resource, finance, commerce and others performed in the department will be computerized. Department would develop paperless working system, he said, adding that UJVNl has approved some other power projects in Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts. He further said that the department is expected to produce around 38 MW at the Bajpur and Nadehi sugar mills with things being modernised.
