The widening work of the Nabarangpur-Umarkote State Highway has been disrupted at many places in the Umarkote Municipality area due to encroachment of Government land.
While the PWD had managed to remove some of these encroachments during drives conducted with the Revenue Department, many structures are yet to be removed.
Sources said though the administration has proposed to widen the State Highway to 33 feet, yet, at some places in the town, the road is measured less than it. This dissimilarity has not only raised eyebrows but also created doubts on the efficacy of the project.
It is alleged that the administration, buckling under pressure from some influential persons and
politicians, has made a compromise in widening the road.
The work could not be completed in time due to encroachments, including a few religious structures and clubs, said a PWD official. He alleged that though the department has requested the local Tehsildar to demolish the illegal structures, no action has been taken yet.
