The hospitals of the State capital are witnessing a spurt in the number of jaundice patients these days. The medical practitioners are attributing the increase in the number of jaundice cases to the recent spell of rains.
Senior Physician at the Associated Hospital of Doon Medical College (DMC), Dr Praveen Panwar informed that the numbers of jaundice case are on rise from last 15 days in the hospital. He attributed recent rains to increase in the number of patients suffering from Jaundice. He informed that 20-25 patients with symptoms of the diseases are visiting the OPDs of the hospital daily. The physician suggested that one should avoid eating stale and food products which are exposed. He added that one should drink boiled water to prevent the spread of the disease. The doctors of the hospital point out that the most of the cases of the disease are coming in from slums of the city. They suggested that the city’s damaged drinking water pipelines could be one of a cause of the spread of the waterborne disease as chances are there that the drinking water could get contaminated with sewer water.
Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes due to abnormally high percentage of pigment bilirubin in the blood. It is produced by breakdown of the blood cells which have hemoglobin that contains iron attached with protein.
