Wednesday, 31 August 2016 | PNS | BRAHMAPUR

A five-member doctors’ team on Tuesday visited the blood bank of the MKCG Medical College Hospital here and started its probe into the alleged transfusion of HIV-infected blood to a four-year-old thalassemia patient of the Sorada area last week.

The team is headed by Brahmapur City Hospital ADMO Dr Saroj Mishra.

The minor boy, who is suffering from thalassemia since his birth, has been receiving blood from the Red Cross blood bank located at the premises of the hospital.

Sources said the child has got blood transfusion 71 times during the last four years at the blood bank.

The team would examine how the child got infected with HIV when his parents are not HIV-affected.

On the other hand, MKCG Medical College and Hospital Superintendent Ashok Kumar Behera claimed that the 71 blood units given to the child had been tested and were found to be not containing AIDS causing HIV. However, the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the issue.

Notably, the minor had taken ill last month and later tested positive for HIV positive.
