Nuclear energy has the potential to meet the rising demand for electricity in India in the coming years. Power generation from nuclear energy does not cause any damage to the environment. This was highlighted at a slogan-writing completion here at Government Senior Secondary School of Excellence, Guna on Tuesday.

The programme was organised as part of the nation-wide campaign to generate awareness about importance of energy and to dispel the misconceptions related to nuclear energy. The event has been supported by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIl), a Government of India undertaking.

Nearly 300 students of the school gathered for the event and wrote highly creative slogans to describe the need for electricity in future and the role of nuclear energy in this regard. The students mentioned that the existing sources of energy such as thermal (coal, gas, petroleum etc) and hydro were not going to last forever and other sources of energy had to be used on a large scale both to augment the energy production and also to control the damage to the environment caused by the conventional energy production techniques.

In addition to solar, biomass and wind energy to produce electricity, nuclear energy was a safe, long-lasting and environment-friendly source of electricity all over the world. It was being used in several countries for the last many decades and proved to be an efficient and inexpensive means to produce electricity.

The programme was conducted by Sandeep Pal and the event was judged by eminent personalities and the school principal, Ajay Nidikar.

The principal gave away prizes to students whose slogans were considered good. On this occasion comics based on Budhiya, a fictional character who motivates villagers to support the setting up of a nuclear power plant, were distributed among the students.
