Filing of nominations by the aspiring candidates for theOctober 5 Students’ Union elections in Government and unaided colleges and universities ended peacefully without any untoward incident on Thursday.
Candidates came to their respective institutions along with their supporters in processions and filed their nomination papers within the stipulated time. Elaborate security arrangements were made in all colleges and universities to avert any untoward incidents.
However, tension ran high at the Capital law College here due to protests by a group of students against lifting of the sine die declared on Wednesday night while another group of students staged a road blockade near Vani Vihar along the National Highway 216 demanding election. A scuffle ensued between the students and the police as the latter tried to evict them from the road.
Besides, students of the BJB Junior College staged a road blockade on the Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway in protest against the decision of the college authorities to cancel the elections.
As per the schedule, candidates can withdraw their candidatures on Friday while the final list of candidates would be published on Saturday. This would be followed by ‘What I Stand For’ meeting on October 4, a day before the elections.
Polling would begin from 8 am to 2 pm on October 5 and the results would be announced in the afternoon on the same day. The oath-taking ceremonies would be held on October 6.
