No possibility of cyclone in Odisha till October 10

With the experience of the Phailin and Hud Hud cyclones, the State Government is well-prepared to face any possible future cyclone, said Chief Secretary AP Padhi here on Wednesday.

Chairing a high-level meeting at the State Secretariat, Padhi reviewed the preparedness for possible cyclones and directed officials to ensure for early information, tele contact and keep the equipments on functional mode to face an emergency situation.

Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan, Fire Services & Home Guard DGP Binay Kumar Behera, Special Relief Commissioner Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra and other senior officials participated in the discussion.  

However, there is no possibility of any cyclone till October 10, said MeT Bhubaneswar chief Sharat Chandra Sahoo, who was present at the meeting. The rainfall rate is recorded normal till the date and would remain normal till October 30, Dr Sahoo added.

In a bid to make the weather forecast system more effective, a Doppler radar has been set up at Paradip while constructions of Doppler radars at Baleswar and Gopalpur are underway, it was informed. The Chief Secretary urged the IMD to expedite the construction works.

Padhi suggested mobile phone operators BSNl, Airtel, Aircel and Vodafone to have necessary technology so that the data can be exchanged among their respective mobile towers during cyclone.

He also suggested all the mobile service providers to get ready for commissioning the mobile towers on trucks for easy mobility of the towers during a natural calamity like cyclone.

As per the data available, a total of 20 ODRAF teams have been formed. Apart from training, each team is being provided equipment for necessary search, rescue and relief operations. Officials said the ODRAF teams are ready to meet any emergency.

Besides, 18 NDRF teams are prepared to face any cyclone situation while around 300 boats are kept ready for relief and rescue operations, the officials said, adding that the effectiveness of all the equipment has been examined during mock drills.

A disaster management plan has been prepared for each district and initiative has been taken accordingly, they said.

The concerned departments have made their plans and finalised their preparations for reservoir management, embankment safety, health, sanitation, cow service, fodder supply, road cleanliness, transport restoration, maintenance of Government buildings, power restoration, water release, sewerage cleanliness and safety of women and children, sources said.
