Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) on Saturday sought report from the Chambal Range Inspector-General (IG) and the Sheopur SP over the suicide of a prisoner in police custody.
The MPHRC has taken cognizance over the suicide of a prisoner, Baisram inside the Vijaypur police station of Sheopur district. Baisram was an accused in a murder case. Commission has sought report from the Chambal range IG and Sheopur SP regarding the incident.
Commission has asked that how does Baisram managed to commit the suicide in the police station. How he reached the window and why there was no official to watch him as he was under police custody.
Commission has sought the answers of various questions from the IG and the SP.
Notably, Commission had made several recommendations over the suicides of the prisoners or detainees in the police custody. Commission had recommended the inspection of the blankets and other items.
Commission had also made recommendations regarding the proper height of the windows and The Commission had also recommended installing CCTV cameras to maintain vigil of the detainees so that their movement inside the lockups. Theses cameras should be installed in such a manner that all the detainees could be watched. Commission had also sent the booklets on this to police stations but the police authority had taken no action on this. It has sought report on this incident. The commission had recommended that arrangements should be made inside the lockup to ensure a person could not commit suicide.
