Indian Diaspora Council - an organisation of People of Indian Origin who migrated as indentured labour during British raj, has appointed Samajwadi Party MlC Madhukar Jatley as its ambassador in UP.
Jaitley is the former advisor to NRI department and Externally Aided Projects Departments of the state government. This would be for the first time that any person from UP has been appointed as Ambassador of IDC in UP.
According to a statement by IDC released on Saturday, the appointment has been made with immediate effect and the term is for three years, with extension on approval of IDC Board of Directors.
The IDC's Ambassador, Uttar Pradesh Diaspora will report directly to the President of Indian Diaspora Council, the statement said.
Jaitley said that the new engagement will be useful for UP to bring in NRI voters to vote in the coming Assembly polls next year after the Election Commission (EC) and the Supreme Court came to a common ground to allow NRI voters to vote in Indian elections.
Jaitley was involved with various infrastructure initiatives of the states such as Metro Rail project in lucknow and in four other cities - Agra, Kanpur, Meerut and Varanasi.
The job of the IDC’s Ambassador will include engagement on behalf of Indian Diaspora Council of non-resident Indians (NRIs) and persons of Indian origin (PIOs), originally from UP or having ancestral roots in the state.
