Guest teachers break fast, end agitation

Wednesday, 31 August 2016 | PNS | Dehradun

The long agitation of the association of Government school guest teachers ended on Tuesday. The fasting members of the association accepted juice from the media advisor to the state Chief Minister Harish Rawat, Surendra Kumar Agarwal to break their fast.

The guest teachers were on path of agitation ever since their services were terminated by the education department at end of the academic session on March 31. For the last four days eight members of the association had been sitting on fast-unto-death at the agitation site near Parade Ground. The state government had released the Government Order (GO) for reappointment of these guest teachers on the vacant post of teachers in the government schools of the state on Monday. On Tuesday the members of the association did brainstorming on the contents of the GO and after much internal discussions decided to call off their stir. A delegation of the association has met the state chief minister on Sunday night and after an assurance from him the top leadership of the association had made up its mind to end the agitation.

The state Vice President of the association, Harish Arya said that the guest teachers are satisfied with the contents of the GO.

He expressed his thanks for the state Chief Minister for supporting the cause of the guest teachers. The education department had employed 6214 guest teachers on purely temporary basis against the vacant posts of lecturers and lecturer Teachers (lT) in the government schools last year. These teachers undertook a massive agitation following their removal. When the Congress government was restored in the state, after President’s rule, it passed a GO for reinstatement of these teachers.

This GO was contested in the court which rendered the recruitment of guest teachers as unconstitutional. The court has said that the government can appointment these teachers till March 17, if its wishes. Based on this verdict the state government has released fresh GO on Monday.
