The Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) on Wednesday made correction in its suspension order released against Assistant professor and Dean, Student Welfare, Shreya Bhattacharya on March 28 for her alleged act of inviting JNU Professor NM Panini as Guest of Honour in a programme on March 19.
The face saving action of the CUJ came after the Raj Bhawan took a strong stand against it for unnecessarily dragging the name of Governor Droupadi Murmu in the order of suspension issued for Bhattacharya. The news of her suspension has been circulating in the national media making the University earn a bad name across the nation.
"I am yet to get a letter from the Raj Bhawan but we have already made a correction. In fact, the usage of words and framing of sentences was done in a way in the earlier letter that caused the confusion, which has been cleared," said CUJ Vice Chancellor Professor Nand Kumar Yadav.
"A probe committee has been formed earlier on the issue and we will get the report by 8 am on Thursday. The University administration will decide on the matter after looking at the report," he said.
Earlier, Principal Secretary to Governor SK Satpathy wrote to the VC today asking him to make correction in the suspension order given to the faculty member Shreya Bhattacharya. He asked the CUJ VC to show the reality and make media houses aware of the truth.
In his letter to the VC, Satpathy wrote that since Governor Droupadi Murmu was busy with his pre-scheduled programmes on March 19 no assent could be given (by the Raj Bhwan) that the Governor would attend the CUJ's programme. Also, the Governor House had not given any confirmation (neither written nor verbal) that the Governor will attend the CUJ programme as Chief Guest.
The letter of the Principal Secretary mentions that it was disappointing that the name of Governor was brought up without any basis in the suspension letter of Bhattacharya.
The officials of Raj Bhawan were troubled with the news items published in a number of newspapers mentioning name of the Governor in the news related to suspension of Bhattacharya.
The news reports mentioned that the Governor had given her consent to attend a programme at CUJ on March 19 but cancelled her programme in the last moments when Bhattacharya invited JNU Professor NM Panini as Guest of Honour in the programme. The Raj Bhawan called the news baseless and misleading.
Bhattacharya was suspended allegedly for inviting JNU professor NM Panini as Guest of Honour to attend 140th birth anniversary celebrations of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel in the university on March 17-19. As per the suspension order the JNU invitee was considered mentor of the group of students of JNU who was involved in anti-national activities on JNU campus recently.
The suspension notice stated that Bhattacharya invited Panini without prior permission and the invitation to Panini without verifying his credentials, led to criticism from different quarters of society. It stated that not only the image of university was tarnished as well as the reputation of vice chancellor was also put on stake and it ultimately led to cancellation of visit of the Governor to the university campus on March 19.
