A constable Hukum Singh, 46, resident of Pauri, died when the firearm he was about to deposit at the police lines in Dehradun on Tuesday evening went off accidentally, killing him on the spot. The incident occurred when he was unloading his firearm.
He had joined duty at the police lines after being transferred from Chamoli three days ago. The state police have released Rs 1.10 lakh as immediate financial assistance to the family of the deceased. One member of the deceased’s family will be provided job in police department as per government’s norms.
Singh who was born in 1970 had joined the police department (Undivided Uttar Pradesh) in 1990.
It is learnt from police sources that he had taken an inmate from Suddhowala jail in connection with his appearance at the court in Rishikesh. After bringing him back to Suddhowala jail, he returned to the police lines to deposit the firearm he was carrying.
The fatal accident happened when he was unloading the weapon. Bullet piercing his brain, he died on the spot. Police on duty heard the fire shot, rushed to the quarter guard room and found Singh lying dead.
Senior police officers, SSP Sadanand Date, SP City Ajay Singh and others rushed to the spot. FSl team also rushed and collected evidences related to incident. The family members of the deceased constable was informed of the accidental death, said CO Manoj Katyal.
