Chhaya Verma, the Congress party’s Rajya Sabha candidate from Chhattisgarh filed nomination at the Chhattisgarh legislative Assembly here on Monday.
She handed over the nomination papers to Principal Secretary of Chhattisgarh legislative Assembly Devendra Verma in the presence of senior party leaders.
Verma was accompanied by leader of Congress legislative Party (ClP) TS Singhdeo, Chhattisgarh State Congress President Bhupesh Baghel, former Mayor Kiranmayee Nayak, former MlA Ravindra Choubey and others.
After filing nomination she told reporters: “ I had received a call from Party’s National President Sonia Gandhi who had informed her that she was selected as party’s Rajya Sabha candidate from Chhattisgarh.”
“I have the blessings of senior party leaders including Bhupesh Baghel, TS Singhdeo and other leaders,” she said.
To the query about what kind of issues she would raise in the upper house of parliament, Verma said that there are plenty of issues to be raised pertaining to Chhattisgarh.
“I will raise issues on rampant corruption and scams happening in Chhattisgarh at the national level,” she said.
Meanwhile replying to the question about the role of Chhattisgarh State Congress unit in deciding the candidate for the upper house, ClP leader TS Singhdeo said : “I want to clarify that we did not have any role in the process.”
“The party’s high command had inquired about 25 more persons including Chhaya Verma and the final call was taken by senior party leaders in New Delhi,” he said while denying any role in the process.
To the question about dissatisfaction in the party ranks, he mentioned that Congress party is like a family and in a family, dissatisfaction does happen at times but ultimately all come together.
He opined that leaders from Chhattisgarh unit of the Congress party have been given opportunities at the national level like the party’s National Treasurer is from Chhattisgarh and some people in party’s National Media Cell also belong to Chhattisgarh. In future also, people from Chhattisgarh will be given chances to work at the national level, he added.
