A worker’s charred body hanging from a tree was found in a ferro alloys plant of Tata Steel here.
The deceased was identified as Krishna Hittary (22), a resident of Mudugan in Assam. He was working under contractor Indicom Tradelink for the last 5 years.
On August 23 last, Krishna was engaged in the night shift duty near finished product site of the plant where molten ferro from top furnaces are drained to the ground and kept for cooling to take the solid size of the material.
As per the statement of supervisor Chandan Hike, he had seen Krishna at about 3.45am at the duty spot, but in the early morning next day his body was found hanging from the branch of a small tree situated about 30 feet distance from the duty spot.
After the news spread, local police seized the dead body, registered a UD case and sent it for postmortem, but in the postmortem report, it was shown to be a death due to suicide. As discussed among the fellow workers, they were not ready to believe the report of the postmortem.
As per statement of Dr Samal of Barbil Sub Divisional Hospital who was in charge of the postmortem, there were signs of burn injury in right arm, two legs and back side of the deceased. First, he attempted to commit suicide by burning and after he failed in his first attempt, he hanged self. But people here described the version as totallyunbelievable.
The question that arises is about the credibility of the post-mortem report. Is it possible to commit suicide by hanging on the part of a man who has 80 per cent burn injuryIJ The workers demanded proper inquiry of the case.
