Following the performance of Chhattisgarh in implementing city bus project, the Central Government has released `15 crore as second installment for the state.
Chhattisgarh is the only state in India which has been released second instalment of the fund from centre for its significant performance in implementing the project, said officials, adding that the central government has already provided `24.57 crore to the state as first payment.
As per information received, the government has approved `183.69 crore for operation of 451 city buses in 70 cities of Chhattisgarh’s 21 clusters. Presently, 400 city buses are plying in Chhattisgarh. For better implementation of the project, as many as nine Urban Public Transport Societies have been constituted.
Notably, Chhattisgarh government has recently awarded for best city bus service. With assistance from the centre, city bus project in Chhattisgarh was started under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The project has largely benefitted students, people belonging to working class and others. The buses
being operated under the scheme is equipped with modern facilities, including CCTV cameras, fire-extinguisher and others.
