The unified check-post at luhurachati under the Sohela police limits in Bargarh district is promoting illegal passage of vehicles, resulting in a huge financial loss to the State exchequer. Of course, the staffers of the toll gate fatten their pockets by this way.
More than 1,000 to 1,200 loaded trucks ferry daily through the check-post and the corrupt officials earn a fast buck by resorting to illegal means.
Each driver gives Rs 20 as entry fee and hereby Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 is collected daily. Although the Government has adopted new technology to check the corruption here and set up computerized system, but the system has failed for last six month.
As a result, the work is done manually creating enough room for underhand deals. Here also the tax collection does not reach its target. During 2012-13 the target was Rs 20.29 crore but the collection was Rs 16.55 crore.
In 2013-14 the target was around Rs 19 crore but the collection stood at Rs 14.48 crore. In 2014-15 the target was Rs 18.45crore but only Rs 14.94 crore was collected. The Motor Vehicle Department has also not fulfilled its target. According to the sources, brokers, officials, politicians and even some Ministers have been involved in the corruption here.
